Unit Bias – when you consume everything just because it’s the ‘right’ portion

Electric editorial collage illustrating Unit Bias

Do you think a portion is the ‘right amount’ just because it’s served that way? That’s Unit Bias – the tendency to assume a standard serving size is ideal, even when it’s not.

Where it can show up

- Food & drinks – people finish meals even when full because ‘that’s the portion size.’
- Medicine – patients take a full pill even if half is enough to work.
- Work & productivity – employees assume they must be productive for a full 8-hour shift just because it’s the standard.

A practical countermeasure

- Listen to your body & logic – a standard portion doesn’t mean it’s right for you.
- Don’t follow patterns blindly – sometimes less is better, sometimes more is needed.
- Optimize consumption – whether it’s food, time, or resources, adjust to actual needs.
