Functional Fixedness – when objects can only be used one way

Electric editorial collage illustrating Functional Fixedness

Do you see an object and think it can only be used for its intended purpose? That’s Functional Fixedness – the tendency to perceive an object only in its traditional role, ignoring other possible uses.

Where it can show up

- Everyday life – scissors are just for paper, even though they can open packages.
- Work – a familiar tool doesn’t solve a new task, but you don’t look for alternatives.
- Problem-solving – solutions are searched for in obvious places, even when a creative approach might work better.

A practical countermeasure

- Think broader – every object can have multiple uses.
- Experiment – try unconventional approaches.
- Train creativity – the more variations you see, the fewer mental limits you have.
