Naïve Realism – when you think you see the world as it really is
Do you believe your views are based on objective facts, while those who disagree are simply misinformed or biased? That’s Naïve Realism – the tendency to think you see reality as it truly is, while others are clouded by ignorance or irrationality.
Where it can show up
- Politics – if someone holds different beliefs, you assume they just ‘don’t get it.’
- Online debates – you believe your viewpoint is obvious to any rational person.
- Workplace – you think your colleagues misunderstand a situation simply because they don’t see it the way you do.
A practical countermeasure
- Recognize that your reality isn’t the only one – others have different experiences and perspectives.
- Don’t assume disagreement = ignorance – your opponent may have valid points you haven’t considered.
- Practice cognitive humility – even your strongest beliefs might not be as solid as they seem.
