Hindsight Bias – when the past feels obvious in hindsight
Do you say ‘I knew it all along!’ even though you were uncertain before? That’s Hindsight Bias – the tendency to see past events as predictable, even when they weren’t at the time.
Where it can show up
- Finance & investing – after a market crash, it seems obvious it was coming, even if you didn’t see it beforehand.
- Relationships & work – a breakup or firing feels ‘inevitable’ only after it happens.
- Sports & elections – the winning team or candidate seems like the obvious choice, but only after the result is known.
A practical countermeasure
- Remember that prediction ≠ hindsight – just because something seems obvious now doesn’t mean it was before.
- Write down your predictions – track how accurate your foresight really is.
- Acknowledge uncertainty – the world is complex, and many things are impossible to foresee.
