Recency Effect – the last things stick in memory best
Do you remember the last words of a conversation but forget the middle? That’s Recency Effect – the most recent items or events are remembered better than those before them.
Where it can show up
- Studying & exams – you may recall the last topics of a course but forget the earlier ones.
- To-do & shopping lists – the last items stick, while the middle gets lost.
- Presentations & speeches – audiences remember the ending of a speech better than the middle.
💡 How to use it?
- End with impact – if you want something remembered, say it last.
- Reinforce key points at the end – summarize main ideas at the end of a talk or discussion.
- Don’t neglect the middle – make a conscious effort to recall what’s between the start and the finish.
