Dread Aversion – when fearing the worst is worse than the event itself

Do you stress over an upcoming exam more than you actually suffer during it? That’s Dread Aversion – the tendency to experience fear of an unpleasant event much more intensely than the pleasure of anticipating a good one.
Where it can show up
- Medicine – the fear of a painful procedure is worse than the procedure itself.
- Work – dreading an upcoming presentation or project drains more energy than actually doing it.
- Personal life – anxiety before a breakup or tough conversation is often worse than the conversation itself.
A practical countermeasure
- Recognize that anticipation is worse than reality – the fear before an event is usually stronger than the event itself.
- Don’t delay the inevitable – the sooner you face the challenge, the less time you spend worrying.
- Focus on facts, not imagination – the mind tends to exaggerate negative possibilities.
