Hostile Attribution Bias – when you see hostility even where there is none
Did someone bump into you, and you assume it was on purpose? That’s Hostile Attribution Bias – the tendency to see neutral or accidental actions as intentionally aggressive.
Where it can show up
- Communication & conflicts – an innocent joke seems like an attack, and a neutral tone feels cold and aggressive.
- Work & colleagues – if a coworker doesn’t greet you, they must be ignoring you (or maybe they were just lost in thought?).
- Driving & traffic – if someone cuts you off, it’s not a mistake, it’s a personal insult… or is it?
A practical countermeasure
- Consider innocent explanations first – most people aren’t plotting against you.
- Don’t jump to conclusions – emotions can make you see hostility where none exists.
- Ask instead of assuming – if someone’s behavior seems off, clarify before making judgments.
