Just-World Hypothesis – when you believe people get what they deserve
Do you think poor people are just lazy and rich people earned their success? That’s Just-World Hypothesis – the tendency to believe everything happens fairly, even when events are random or unjust.
Where it can show up
- Social inequality – assuming that unsuccessful people deserve their fate while successful people earned everything fairly.
- Victim blaming – believing that if something bad happens to someone, they must have ‘brought it on themselves.’
- Work & career – thinking that promotions always go to the most deserving, rather than those who were just in the right place at the right time.
A practical countermeasure
- Accept that the world is chaotic – effort and morality don’t always determine outcomes.
- Question simple explanations – failure isn’t always the result of mistakes, and success isn’t always the result of talent.
- Consider systemic factors – circumstances, environment, and luck play a huge role in life outcomes.
