Quantification Bias – when only measurable things seem to matter

Electric editorial collage illustrating Quantification Bias

Do you trust numbers more than anything else? That’s Quantification Bias – the tendency to give more weight to measurable data while ignoring what can’t be easily quantified.

Where it can show up

- Work – a manager evaluates performance only through KPIs, ignoring team morale.
- Education – universities focus on test scores but overlook creativity and motivation.
- Medicine – relying only on lab results while ignoring how the patient actually feels.

A practical countermeasure

- Remember that not everything important can be measured – emotions, motivation, and intuition also matter.
- Find a balance – numbers are useful, but without context, they can mislead you.
- Don’t let metrics dictate decisions – sometimes qualitative factors outweigh quantitative ones.
