Survivorship Bias – when you only see the winners
Do you think success is just a matter of making the right choices because all you see are winners? That’s Survivorship Bias – the tendency to focus on those who ‘made it’ while ignoring those who didn’t because they’re invisible.
Where it can show up
- Business – startups seem like an easy path to riches because no one talks about the thousands that failed.
- Self-improvement – you read success tips from millionaires but don’t see those who followed the same advice and got nowhere.
- History – planes return with bullet holes, and engineers reinforce those areas, forgetting about the ones that never made it back.
A practical countermeasure
- Ask: who are we not seeing? – if you only look at success stories, you’re missing half the picture.
- Find complete data – survivors aren’t the only ones who went through the process.
- Remember, successes are more visible than failures – but that doesn’t mean they’re more common.
