Availability Cascade – when repeating something enough makes it feel true
The more you hear an idea, the more true it seems? That’s Availability Cascade – a process where information starts feeling like fact simply because it’s repeated often enough.
Where it can show up
- Fake news & myths – false claims about health, finance, or science become ‘common knowledge’ just because they’re repeated frequently.
- Politics & propaganda – the more a leader is called a ‘hero’ or a ‘villain,’ the more people believe it, even without real evidence.
- Moral panic – society suddenly fears a nonexistent threat because media and social networks keep amplifying it.
A practical countermeasure
- Repetition ≠ truth – verify facts, even if you’ve heard them a hundred times.
- Be skeptical of popular beliefs – just because something sounds logical and is widely discussed doesn’t mean it’s true.
- Look for original sources – many widely accepted claims have no real scientific or historical basis.
