Reactance – when being told ‘no’ makes you want to do it even more

Electric editorial collage illustrating Reactance

Does being told ‘no’ make you want to do it even more? That’s Reactance – a psychological response where attempts to limit your freedom trigger resistance and a desire to do the opposite.

Where it can show up

- Advertising & marketing – phrases like ‘limited edition’ or ‘only for VIPs’ make you want the product more.
- Rules & laws – the stricter the restriction, the stronger the temptation to break it, even if you weren’t interested before.
- Personal relationships – when someone tells you not to talk to someone or do something, you suddenly want to do it even more.

A practical countermeasure

- Pause before reacting – if you feel resistance, ask yourself: ‘Do I really want this, or am I just reacting to the restriction?’
- Replace rebellion with conscious choice – sometimes rules exist for a reason, even if they feel restrictive.
- Use the effect strategically – if you want someone to do something, try ‘forbidding’ them from doing it.
