Reactive Devaluation – when an idea seems bad just because of who suggested it

Do you reject a good idea just because it came from your opponent? That’s Reactive Devaluation – the tendency to dismiss proposals just because they come from an ‘undesirable’ source, even if they’re beneficial.
Where it can show up
- Politics & negotiations – people reject compromises simply because they come from the other side.
- Workplace conflicts – companies ignore good suggestions from competitors, even when they could be valuable.
- Personal relationships – if a rival or disliked person makes a suggestion, it feels suspicious by default.
A practical countermeasure
- Focus on the idea, not the person – even someone you dislike can offer valuable insights.
- Imagine the idea came from an ally – would your judgment change?
- Separate emotions from logic – don’t reject beneficial solutions just because of personal bias.
