Truth Bias – when you believe people, even when they might be lying
Do you naturally trust what people say? That’s Truth Bias – the tendency to assume information is honest, even without evidence.
Where it can show up
- Lies & manipulation – people are less likely to doubt words from familiar or authoritative figures, even when misleading.
- Financial scams – investors trust ‘promising projects’ because no one thinks they’ll be deceived.
- Personal life – believing promises, even when they’ve been broken multiple times.
A practical countermeasure
- Trust, but verify – facts matter more than words, especially in important matters.
- Focus on logic, not emotions – people tend to believe comforting stories, even if they don’t hold up.
- Remember that everyone can be wrong – honesty ≠ truth, even if someone believes what they say.
