False Uniqueness Bias – when you think you’re more unique than you are
Do you believe your ideas, talents, or projects are one of a kind, while others are just average? That’s False Uniqueness Bias – the tendency to overestimate how special you are and underestimate how many others share similar qualities.
Where it can show up
- Work – you’re convinced no one else can handle tasks as well as you do.
- Creativity – you think your idea is groundbreaking, only to discover someone has already done something similar.
- Social skills – you assume your values and perspectives are rare, even though many people share them.
A practical countermeasure
- Check how truly unique your idea is – it might already exist in another form.
- Acknowledge that others are competent too – being good doesn’t mean others are bad.
- Use others’ achievements as inspiration, not a threat – uniqueness often comes from refining existing ideas.
