Duration Neglect – when the ending matters more than the experience

Electric editorial collage illustrating Duration Neglect

Does a long enjoyable experience feel no better than a short one if it ended badly? That’s Duration Neglect – the tendency to judge experiences based on their final moments rather than their overall length.

Where it can show up

- Vacations – a week at a resort with an unpleasant last day feels worse than a short but perfect weekend.
- Pain – a long medical procedure that eased at the end is remembered as less painful than a short but sharp one.
- Movies & books – a bad ending can ruin the memory of an otherwise great story.

A practical countermeasure

- Evaluate the whole experience, not just the end – one bad moment doesn’t erase all the good ones.
- Remember that memory is subjective – we recall peak moments, but they don’t define the entire experience.
- Practice mindfulness – enjoy the journey, not just the outcome.
