Stereotyping – when you judge a person based on their group
Do you think programmers are introverted and athletes aren’t smart? That’s Stereotyping – the tendency to expect people to have certain traits just because they belong to a group, even when you have no actual information about them.
Where it can show up
- Workplace – assuming young employees are lazy and older ones can’t handle technology.
- Culture – believing all French people are romantic or all Germans are strict, even though individuals vary.
- Gender – expecting men to be better at math and women to be better at caregiving, despite personal differences.
A practical countermeasure
- Focus on the person, not the label – people are always more complex than their category.
- Seek evidence for or against your assumptions – evaluate individuals based on real qualities.
- Remember that stereotypes shape your decisions – they can blind you to reality and limit your thinking.
