Gender Bias – when gender shapes expectations
Do you assume engineers are mostly men and teachers are mostly women? That’s Gender Bias – implicit assumptions that lead us to perceive people differently based on gender, even when there’s no rational basis for it.
Where it can show up
- Careers – assuming women are worse at math or that men can’t be good preschool teachers.
- Language – defaulting to ‘he’ when referring to a person or an animal without gender cues.
- Ability evaluation – expecting men to be better leaders or technical experts while underestimating women in the same fields.
A practical countermeasure
- Recognize bias in yourself – if you automatically link jobs to gender, pause and reconsider.
- Judge based on facts, not stereotypes – gender doesn’t determine intelligence, skills, or personality.
- Be mindful of language – if you default to male pronouns in neutral cases, try rethinking that habit.
