Social Cryptomnesia – when you remember change but forget who fought for it
Do you enjoy rights and freedoms but can’t recall who fought for them? That’s Social Cryptomnesia – when society recognizes that change has happened but forgets how it occurred and who made it possible.
Where it can show up
- Civil rights – people take freedoms and equality for granted, forgetting those who fought for them.
- Feminism & women’s rights – many assume women ‘always’ had the right to work and vote, ignoring the struggle behind it.
- Technological breakthroughs – people use the internet and smartphones without knowing who made them possible.
A practical countermeasure
- Learn the history of change – major shifts don’t happen on their own.
- Acknowledge the pioneers – remember who actually fought for what we now take for granted.
- Spread awareness – remind others that behind every right and convenience, there were sacrifices.
