Where it can show up
- Work & professions – people recall roles according to stereotypes (e.g., assuming an engineer is male and a nurse is female).
- Social situations – memories may ‘adjust’ details to align with cultural expectations.
- Historical events – over time, we view the past through modern beliefs, which can distort reality.
A practical countermeasure
- Double-check facts – don’t rely solely on memory, especially when stereotypes are involved.
- Question your own recollections – be aware that your brain might fill in false details.
- Think flexibly – expose yourself to different perspectives to avoid falling into stereotype traps.
