Authority Bias – when you trust authority figures, even if they’re wrong
Do you tend to trust experts, bosses, or celebrities just because they hold authority? That’s Authority Bias – the tendency to overvalue the accuracy of influential figures’ opinions, regardless of their actual validity.
Where it can show up
- Medicine – people blindly follow doctors or ‘TV experts,’ even when their advice contradicts science.
- Work & management – employees make decisions based on a boss’s opinion rather than factual evidence.
- Politics & media – statements from public figures are accepted as truth without critical analysis.
A practical countermeasure
- Separate authority from facts – a high status doesn’t make someone automatically right.
- Ask questions – if something sounds off, check the source and logic behind it.
- Trust, but verify – even experts make mistakes, and authority is no substitute for critical thinking.
