Halo Effect – when one good trait overshadows everything else
Do you assume someone is smart just because they’re confident and charismatic? That’s Halo Effect – the tendency to attribute extra positive traits to a person based on one appealing characteristic.
Where it can show up
- Work & career – charismatic candidates seem more competent, even with less experience.
- Appearance – attractive people are perceived as kinder and smarter, regardless of actual traits.
- Media & society – celebrities known for one skill are often seen as experts in unrelated areas.
A practical countermeasure
- Focus on facts, not first impressions – one great trait doesn’t mean someone excels at everything.
- Separate skills from personality – confidence doesn’t always equal competence.
- Don’t judge by looks – attractiveness and charm can hide flaws.
