Why We Keep Finding Evidence That We Are Right
Once we prefer an explanation, it becomes easy to search for supporting evidence and much harder to notice what could prove us wrong.
A normal situation
You think a new diet works. You search for success stories, save positive posts and remember friends who improved. Critical studies feel less convincing, so they receive less attention.
What is happening?
A preferred belief can change what we search for, how we interpret mixed evidence and what we remember later. The result is a comfortable information loop.
Search engines and social feeds can make this easier because almost any view has supporting examples somewhere online. More searching does not automatically mean better checking.
The useful lens
Confirmation Bias
This does not prove that one bias caused the decision. It is a useful lens for asking a better question and checking the evidence.
Evidence note: Confirmation bias is an umbrella label for several ways existing beliefs or hypotheses can influence information search and interpretation. It should not be reduced to one behaviour such as reading only agreeable news, and a preference for confirming tests is not irrational in every task or environment.
