Pareidolia – when your brain sees patterns that aren’t there
Do you see faces in clouds or hear ‘hidden messages’ in music? That’s pareidolia – the tendency to perceive random images or sounds as meaningful.
Where it can show up
- Clouds – they seem to form shapes like animals or faces.
- The Moon – you see a face on it, but it’s just a pattern of craters.
- Music – some people hear words in random noises or reversed recordings.
A practical countermeasure
- Understand that your brain seeks familiar patterns – it’s an evolutionary feature, not reality.
- Be skeptical – if you see something unusual, ask yourself: is it real or just an illusion?
- Test your perception – try looking at the same image from different angles, and the illusion may disappear.
