Illusion of Transparency – when you think people can read your mind

Electric editorial collage illustrating Illusion of Transparency

Do you think others understand your thoughts and emotions as clearly as you do? That’s Illusion of Transparency – the tendency to overestimate how much others perceive your mental state and how well you understand theirs.

Where it can show up

- Conversations – you assume your nervousness is obvious, but others don’t even notice.
- Work – you expect your boss to know you want a raise, even though you’ve never said anything.
- Relationships – you believe your partner ‘should just know’ how you feel without you explaining.

A practical countermeasure

- Don’t expect people to read your mind – if something matters, say it clearly.
- Remember that emotions aren’t as visible as you think – your feelings are less obvious to others than they are to you.
- Clarify what others think – don’t rely on assumptions, ask directly.
