Persistence – when traumatic memories keep coming back

Trying to forget a painful event, but it keeps coming back? That’s Persistence – when the brain forces us to relive traumatic memories even when we want to move on.
Where it can show up
- Trauma & stress – negative experiences stick more than neutral ones and can replay in our minds.
- Social situations – you might obsess over an awkward moment or mistake long after others have forgotten it.
- Sleep & nightmares – trauma-related memories can resurface in dreams, increasing anxiety.
💡 How to cope?
- Don’t suppress emotions – the more you fight a memory, the stronger it becomes.
- Reframe the experience – try to see the situation differently and find something valuable in it.
- Practice mindfulness – meditation and focus techniques help reduce the grip of intrusive thoughts.
