Courtesy Bias – when you hide your real opinion to avoid offending others
Told your friend their new haircut looks great, even though you hate it? That’s Courtesy Bias – the tendency to soften your opinion to avoid hurting others’ feelings.
Where it can show up
- Feedback & reviews – people praise bad service or low-quality products just to be polite.
- Work & career – employees hesitate to criticize a boss’s bad ideas out of fear of conflict.
- Personal relationships – agreeing with friends out of politeness, even when you actually disagree.
A practical countermeasure
- Be honest but tactful – you can express your opinion without being rude.
- Know when truth matters more than politeness – especially when quality or success is at stake.
- Don’t be afraid to disagree – respectful disagreement is better than empty compliments.
