Zero-Sum Bias – when you think someone’s gain is your loss
Do you think that if someone gets richer, others must get poorer? That’s Zero-Sum Bias – the mistaken belief that one person’s gain must come at another’s expense, even when resources can grow.
Where it can show up
- Economics – believing that if one country prospers, another must suffer, even though global wealth increases.
- Career – thinking a colleague’s promotion reduces your chances, even though the company could expand.
- Relationships – assuming a friend’s new connections mean they value you less, even though social circles can grow.
A practical countermeasure
- Remember that many resources grow – money, knowledge, opportunities, and relationships can expand rather than just shift around.
- Don’t view everything as competition – many situations create mutual benefits, not just winners and losers.
- Look at facts, not feelings – if someone succeeds, it doesn’t mean you’re worse off.
